Not one hand was raised when missionary Mark Barnes asked the ten men before him how many had ever memorized a Bible verse.
Mark has been teaching a Wednesday night Bible study on discipleship for the last month. Seventeen Bena Bena men, who have all trusted Christ this year, have participated in the study.
"These men need some solid but simple teaching," Mark said.
The men were given their first memory assignment last week, and at last night's meeting all but two had memorized it without error. Mark gave them their next verse and they worked on it in class. Three men were able to write it word-perfect at the end of class.
The men are excited and eager to hear the Word of God. One of them, Hetox, said, "The words of God are becoming very clear to me, and now I can know that I have life forever in Jesus Christ." Others have made similar statements.
Mark works at the Highlands Region center as the public relations and community development person. He attends Gapagunagavo Community Church and has been teaching the class because the pastor, Oliofa, has had a heavy workload.
Oliofa has been reaching out to the young men in the community, and Tuesday he shared God's word with a group of 37 men. Men who are hungry to hear the message and who have a desire to see their lives changed. Mark had the opportunity to share his testimony with the group.
Pray for Oliofa and Mark as they work with the Bena Bena men, that the young believers will grow in their walk with God, and that many more will come to know Christ.
