Last week missionaries teaching evangelistic Bible lessons to the Dinangat people in Papua New Guinea introduced the concept of being born again.
To illustrate the teaching, the missionary team hung two bilums (string bags) before the people. In one of the bags -- that are used for a variety of jobs from carrying produce to and from the garden to carrying babies -- they placed a doll. They told the people that this bilum represented being in Satan's kingdom and they presented the problem of getting from there to the other bag -- God's kingdom.
They emphasized that the doll couldn't get out of the bag on its own or by doing good works and told them that only God's Holy Spirit could move the doll to God's bilum.
After the meeting Ote confessed that she knew she was in Satan's bilum. "I am a sinner. God alone can save me. … Only God can take us from Satan's bilum and put us into God's. And I know He will do that."
Ote anticipates hearing about the One who can produce the move into God's kingdom.
One man made that move yesterday. Gary Smith's Dinangat co-worker, who helps check the lessons before they are taught to the people, trusted in Christ.
"When I heard God's laws," Ronny said, "I knew that I had broken them, and I knew that I was in Satan's hand and I was afraid. But now I see what Jesus did, how He completely paid for my sin and I am not afraid anymore."
Gary and Ronny rejoiced that the Dinangat man is now in God's bilum.
