The Dinangat people of Papua New Guinea like to keep their missionaries fired up and on their toes.
Missionaries Gary and Esther Smith wrote, "Last night it rained and some people said that men from the other village made it happen to mess up our time together."
At first the Smiths were disappointed, until they saw it as an opportunity to teach. After asking who gave the rain, the Dinangats said "God did!"
Gary wrote, "So I thought 'Hmm, that's interesting.' So knowing that they can easily live with two conflicting ideas I then asked them, 'Well, did someone make the rain happen?' And sure enough they said, 'Yes, someone over from the other village did that.'"
"Are you serious?" asked Gary. "You all know who created everything. You all know then who is the owner of everything. And you all know who is in control of everything."
The Dinangats answered, "God!"
Gary asked, "So what do you think; can a man really control the weather?"
They responded "No! That's not true!"
Gary wrote, "Come to find out later that people answer incorrectly on purpose! They do it to make us get fired up and teach more passionately! Ha! I guess it's their way of playing devil's advocate."
Please pray for the Dinangats to keep being so interested by God that they keep joking around and keep listening.
