Yesterday the Dinangat people in Papua New Guinea began hearing the story of Joseph.
Missionaries Jeremiah Markley and Ralf Schlegel took turns reading the story to the point where Joseph was cast into prison. The people listened attentively, soaking in every word.
Then Gary Smith said to the people, "Come on, years ago God told Joseph that he was going to be a great leader and now look at him. His brothers sold him into slavery and Potiphar's wife totally lied about him and now he sits in jail. What's that all about? Has God reneged on his word?"
Without hesitation the people agreed, "No way! God always does what he says! God is not like us people who forget, get tired, or lie. He is good."
On Friday, as the people listened to a story about the twin sons -- Esau and Jacob -- born to Isaac and Rebekah, they learned once again that God's ways are different.
"We used to believe that all second-born sons are bad," said one man. "We even have stories from our ancestors about it. But now we've seen two big stories showing that God made the right choice like Abel and now Jacob. Are we not learning that God's Word is true and our beliefs from before are false?"
"That's right," said another man. "If it's not in the Bible we shouldn't believe it. God's Word is truth!"
Pray that the Dinangat people will continue to learn that God is true to His promises and that they'll come to believe in the promised Deliverer.
