Hardly a dry eye could be found yesterday as the Dinangats watched missionary Gary Smith raise a knife to slay his son Caleb. Even the missionaries were in tears.
Gary and Caleb were acting out the story of Abraham almost sacrificing Isaac. When Gary released his son, they embraced and Gary joined the tearful crowd.
"It was so real putting my own son on the altar to be killed," Gary wrote. "And it seemed like eternity as I raised the knife until the angel told me to stop."
But finally the voice shouted, "Abraham, do not kill your son."
As Gary began teaching after the dramatic performance, he tried to choke back the tears as the people sat in silence.
After the lesson, Epox stood and said, "I want to say something. You all pay attention! God has shown you today that He is waiting on us to change our thinking and follow His way. We are all sinners and deserve death just like Isaac, but God is holding up the knife waiting for us. What will we do? Will we listen to Him and follow His way or will we just die? Each of you should decide."
Then Musawe got up and said, "We have all just seen that drama, and here's what I think. Just as Isaac had his hands and legs bound up waiting for death, so we are bound to sin and there is nothing we can do. But God provided that lamb that was caught by its horns so that it would be an acceptable sacrifice in Isaac's place. I think the Deliverer will do this kind of work. Because God said the Deliverer will save us from sin and Satan."
The rapt attention of the crowd was much different than earlier in the week when Gary saw several people asleep during the teaching.
As he spoke to people about their tiredness, he found that "everyone is staying up so late listening to the tapes and talking about the day's lesson that they're not getting enough sleep."
Please pray that the Dinangats' interest will remain high and that their anxiety for a Deliverer will result in clearly understanding God's Word and placing their faith in Christ.
