DINANGATS WEIGH 'HEAVY TALK'

When they heard how Satan deceived Eve, several women began crying - others hung their heads.

February 14, 2008

by David Bell

For the past two days the Dinangat people in Papua New Guinea have been hearing about Adam and Eve's disobedience to God's command and their separation from God.

Several women began crying on Tuesday after they heard how Satan deceived Eve, and saw the methods he used in doing so. Others in the audience hung their heads.

"I thought maybe they were just going to the land of Nod … falling asleep," wrote missionary Gary Smith. "But after the teaching several men got up and shared what was going on."

"This talk here has really convicted me," said Opangnepe, a man who usually doesn't say much. "I think our ancestors were deceived by God's enemy and now we too are being led down the path to death.

"We too are following Satan. What we were doing in the past and are doing now is wrong. My stomach is in knots, and I want to cry. I'm so happy that these missionaries have come here to show us the truth so we can understand God's Word and not just die."

Irike affirmed what Opangnepe said. Then one of the Dinangat leaders stood to speak.

"The talk is really deep," said Jonoke. "Let's go to our houses and listen to the tapes and read the summary papers and really weigh what has been said today because it's heavy talk and I'm glad to hear it."

As the teaching continued on Wednesday, the people had more questions for the missionaries.

"When Adam and Eve sinned they were separated from God. Now is there a way back to God or not?" Basa asked.

"Since Adam and Eve ate from the tree and died, is that why we all die today?" asked Asadi.

The people were told to keep listening to the teaching and they will hear the answers to their questions.

Please pray that God's Word will continue to speak to the Dinangats and that they will trust in the One who is the way back to God.
