Mike and Sandy Mikolavich, along with fellow missionary Robert Westerveld, traveled this week to assist missionaries to the Inapang people of Papua New Guinea in their first stages of ministry.
Robert, who translates and teaches among the Iwalaqamalje people, is doing culture and language evaluations for Matthias and Petra Mueller who recently joined Daniel and Elizabeth Moore and Bill and Kellie Housely to form the Inapang team.
Sandy and another literacy consultant, Lori Morley, visited the Inapang village earlier this year to help the missionaries design literacy primers and reading materials. Sandy is now observing literacy classes to give encouragement, coaching and practical help.
"We want the Inapangs to have personal access to the Word that the team is now translating into their language," wrote Mike and Sandy about the vital part literacy will have in the Inapang church.
While Sandy concentrates on literacy and Robert on the evaluations, Mike is spending some of his time working with Daniel Moore.
"I'll disciple him to prepare chronological Bible lessons in the context of the Inapang culture and in their vernacular language," wrote Mike. "These will be written lessons that will be used by our NTM team as they do the first evangelistic teaching."
After a church is established, Bible teachers and future church elders can take these lessons to other Inapang villages to teach the Good News.
"Our goal is to [plant an] indigenous New Testament church ... that has the best chance of thriving for generations to come," the Mikolaviches wrote.
Pray that the missionaries will establish a firm foundation for the future church.
