NOT READY TO SAY GOOD-BYE

Rey and JingJing

October 5, 2006

by Debbie Burgett

After battling hepatitis B for ten years, a dear church elder and friend to missionaries, is going into liver failure.

"Fifteen years ago, Rey was an 18-year-old, well on the way to becoming an alcoholic when he met the Lord Jesus," wrote missionaries Paul and Debbie Howells. "His life was miraculously turned around. He became a faithful servant of the Lord Jesus, hiking hours every week to take the Gospel to people who had never heard."

The Howells estimate that those touched by his life reach into the hundreds.

"In 1999, Rey became one of the church elders and in 2000, he and his wife, JingJing, were sent here along with two other families and ourselves to be missionaries to the Tala-Andig people," wrote Debbie. "Their little daughter, Sharon, was born here and I had the joy of delivering her."

By 2004, Rey was getting weaker and could no longer carry the work load. He and his wife returned home but continued to teach and disciple in the church.

Two Sunday's ago, he collapsed while preaching and was taken to the hospital.

"We fought back the tears while the Doctor explained to us about liver failure," Debbie wrote. "[Rey] is very fragile right now and needs to keep as positive an outlook as he can, especially as his wife JingJing is expecting their second baby at the end of November and is having complications with her pregnancy."

"We believe that God can work a miracle and give us more years to partner with Rey and JingJing in the Gospel. They are our beloved son and daughter in the Lord, and we have shed a lot of tears in the past few days at the thought that soon, if his liver continues to fail, we may have to say a final earthly good-bye to Rey."

Please pray for this precious family and co-workers in the Lord. Pray for wisdom, for comfort, and most of all, for a miracle.
