BREAKING THE ICE IN A DISTANT VILLAGE

Mesari and her daughter

June 23, 2006

by David Bell

Staring eyes and screaming babies greeted the white-skinned missionary, an uncommon sight in the remote Dinangat village.

Both the friendly faces and the critical faces that greeted missionary Elisabeth Schlegel were disarmed as she began to talk to them in their language.

"Can she really speak our language?"

They could hardly believe it. But then they started introducing themselves.

"I am his mother and this is my second born daughter, and she here is my cousin and over there he is my uncle, and the one standing next to him is the brother-in-law of the one standing over there and …."

Elli, as she likes to be called, was very tired as she lay down on a mat in one of their small bamboo houses for the night.

Her exhaustion was understandable. She left her home village with Mesari and Mesari's 1-year-old daughter, Lotte, on Monday to visit the distant village, feeling that three hours of hiking over one mountain after another was worth making new relationships.

As Elli made the return hike on Wednesday, she was very satisfied with how her visit had gone.

"I hope and pray that their hesitance and shyness towards us will slowly go away and that they would let God prepare their hearts for His wonderful message of salvation," wrote Elli.

"Please join us in praying for that."
