Where I've come from... LIttle did I know that my two years at Ravencrest Chalet Bible School (Estes Park, Colorado) were preparing me for missionary service! It wasn't until my last year at Bible school that I began to learn more about New Tribes Mission. The Lord knew that I would need those two years of Bible school before I could enter New Tribes training. In the fall of 2005 I entered New Tribes Missions Institute in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania. I spent a year there learning about tribal church planting. In the fall of 2006, New Tribes training took me to Roach, Missouri to the Language Institute. There we were taught how to go about learning another language and culture. I completed my training with the Linguistics Course which ended in December 2007. It is very helpful for at least one person on a tribal church planting team to have this training. Why? In order to analyze and understand a language that has never been studied or written down. We want to create an alphabet for each language so that we can give the people their very own translation of the Bible.
Where I'm at...
After about a year of raising support, I arrived in Indonesia in November of 2008. I am currently in full time language and culture study. This first year on the field will be spent learning Bahasa Indonesia, the national language of Indonesia, in preparation for later joining a tribal work. It is so important to learn the national culture and be able to communicate effectively anywhere in Indonesia. Learning Indonesian will also enable me to work alongside local Indonesian churches and the missionaries they send.
And where I'm going... Only in the next year or so will my long-term ministry assignment be decided in co-operation with the NTM field leadership of Indonesia. I would like to be part of a church planting team in a tribal location. New Tribes works in several regions throughout the country. There are opportunities either to join an existing tribal work or to go into unreached areas. |
