Bill Davis and his wife, Donna, work among the Palawano people of the Philippines. In partnership with several Palawanos, Bill has translated the Book of Acts.
To ensure the accuracy of the translation, it was reviewed by an NTM missionary who is experienced in translation and in helping missionaries translate.
"All the issues that showed up … need to be gone over and reworked," Bill and Donna wrote.
Bill is able to make some of the changes himself, and on Tuesday and Thursdays a translation committee of Palawano believers is helping him with other changes.
"Then each change needs to be re-checked for comprehension, twice, with two different individuals who haven't been involved in the process so far," the couple wrote.
Nursalin works with Bill on Wednesdays, and Arnel helps on Fridays.
But Bill is not only cleaning up his Acts.
"Bill has also drafted Ephesians, and is working through that at the same time," the couple wrote. After he and the translation committee complete that work, Donna reads it to Rini. In her own words, Rini says back to Donna what she believes Ephesians is saying, and Donna records that.
This accomplishes two things. It ensures that the translation is clear and can be understood by the Palawanos, and it gives Bill an opportunity to look for more natural ways of wording the translation.
"Please pray for all these people involved in helping us with this job. We depend on them!" the couple wrote. "And for us, pray for daily strength and wisdom."
