Indonesia is becoming "home" to newly-arrived missionaries Lawrence and Jodie Elroy.
They are studying Indonesian culture and language and at first, Jodie had a major attack of "culture shock."
"I am pleased to say that God is giving me victory in this area," wrote Jodie. "I am still adjusting to the many differences here, but am starting to actually enjoy life and my family again. … The main struggle I am having is being so far from family. Just knowing that I can't see them whenever I want is hard."
Some things haven't changed. Lawrence and Jodie still get up early and rush to get the kids ready for school. They still have their quiet time before starting their day. But when their language teacher arrives, and they spend the morning studying culture and language together, the differences become more obvious.
Milk, water and eggs are delivered right to their door, and shopping at open markets is a totally new experience. They put on backpacks, hop on public transportation and visit many small stores to get the items they need. One-stop shopping is not a concept familiar to Indonesia.
Lawrence and Jodie are preparing for a ministry in missionary aviation among the Indonesian people and are looking forward to the day when they are thoroughly comfortable with the culture and language. Lawrence is a missionary pilot and mechanic.
Pray for Lawrence and Jodie during this time of transition. Pray also for their future ministry among the Indonesian people.
