Today (Monday) begins our second week of language study here in Indonesia. As Bryan says, we have begun “Indonesian pre-school.” Although overwhelming at times, we have been blessed with a wonderful bi-lingual tutor who is helping us expand our vocabulary while at the same time being gracious to work with our weaknesses and learning styles. We will be working one-on-one with this tutor for the next eight weeks before entering the classroom. This provides us with a great overview of the language, allowing us to be able to recognize, write and speak nearly 1,000 words before applying the grammatical principles and making sentences in the classroom.
Currently, we know how to count to 10, how to pronounce the modes of transportation, the names of various fruits and veggies and how to go shopping and ask “Barapa ini” (how much is this?). You definitely know you are new to the language when you rejoice over the small things, like being able to count to ten, recall the word for the color blue or tell your neighbor “Selamat Pagi” (good morning).
Our journey into the Indonesian culture and language has just begun and your prayers for focus and encouragement through this daily grind are coveted. Thanks for partnering with us in reaching the Indonesian people with the gospel!
