LANGUAGE EVALUATIONS PASSED; TRANSLATION CAN BEGIN

Rachel and her brother DJ are following in their parent`s footsteps.

November 1, 2007

by Dena McMaster

Missionary Rachel Searcy and her brother DJ just completed a series of language tests given by NTM missionaries experienced in evaluating culture and language acquisition.

DJ passed the third level evaluation of his use of the Punan language in Indonesia. The consultants recommended additional study in some areas of culture and language but he is essentially finished with formal study.

Rachel passed her final language evaluation and is now ready to begin translating the Bible into the Punan language.

"It doesn't mean that I know all there is to know," wrote Rachel, "but it does mean that I have the basics in order to start translation…. The first step is some practice exercises, both to train me and to train my Punan co-workers in the process of translation."

Rachel will be working with a young Punan woman named, Hinon, for the next several weeks. They will be translating a book explaining Jewish culture. When they are comfortable with that, they will begin translating a number of Scripture passages to refine their translation techniques. After these are checked for accuracy, translation can begin in earnest.

The Punan church will gather for a conference in December and Rachel is preparing materials for a translation seminar following the conference that will explain translation principles more clearly to those interested.

Pray for Rachel and her Punan co-workers as they begin translating the Scriptures. Pray also that the believers will desire to read God's Word in their own language and that they will grow in Christ as they study His Word.
