CULTURE AFFECTS GUANANO BELIEVERS

October 30, 2006

by Dena McMaster

Spiritual darkness pervades the small Brazilian town where the Guanano church meets. The people blame witchcraft for numerous suicides.

The Guananos are animists: They believe that the world is populated by spirits which influence their lives. Guanano men are taught chants that will manipulate those spirits to help them.

Now the Guanano believers think they can manipulate God in the same way. They often fast, thinking that God will see their suffering and "cave in" to their requests. If they receive their request, it reinforces their belief that they have found a successful formula to manipulate God.

Pray that the Guanano believers will come to know who God is and who they are in Christ. Pray that they will realize that He wants a relationship with them and that He is the Sovereign God who cannot be manipulated.
