BIBLE TEACHERS STRUGGLING WITH LITERACY

Missionaries training Guananos how to teach the Bible.

April 8, 2009

by Christina Johnson

Guananos in Brazil are learning to read, but the literacy skills vary. Some are still quite illiterate in the village where missionary Barry Spor is working, but some are getting better at reading and comprehension.

Five Guananos are training to be Bible teachers and are learning from the missionaries how to teach lessons to unbelievers, as well as believers, in their tribe.

Currently, the trainees are having a hard time relating the lesson material to the scriptures. Although the process is slow, they still remain enthusiastic about what they are learning.

"Most of them have taught one of the three lessons they are responsible for and are working on their second," Barry wrote. "They are asking you to pray that they not give up because it is so hard to understand what is on paper."

The trainees have expressed a desire to overcome these literacy obstacles so they can use the lessons to evangelize other Guananos and to also help believers continue learning about God's Word.

"Satan has tried to make them quit and keep this from happening, so please pray for them," Barry wrote.
