The Landuma people in Guinea blame demons for his disappearance while authorities have detained Alfa, the last person to see Mamadu, as the prime suspect.
Two weeks ago Alfa and Mamadu went hunting for meat to feed their hungry families. Their prey lived in the deepest part of a large cave which Landumas believe is inhabited by demons.
The two men proceeded to hunt the large bats with sticks and collect them in a bag. After a while, Mamadu said he was tired and wanted to go. Alfa said he needed to get three more bats he had hit.
Alfa gathered the bats and turned to tell Mamadu to bring the sack, but his hunting partner was no longer there.
"Perhaps he started back and is waiting for me," Alfa thought. Though it was strange that Mamadu would go home without Alfa, there seemed to be no other explanation. So Alfa went home alone.
After discovering that Mamadu was not back home, a search party was formed. Several religious leaders and teachers in the group were convinced that the demons in the cave had imprisoned Mamadu and wouldn't let him go until they were properly appeased.
The people called for diviners who knew how to deal with demons and then began taking a collection to reward the one who was able to obtain Mamadu's release.
Upon hearing of Mamadu's disappearance, missionary Kirk Rogers and his family joined in the search.
"We looked everywhere we could in the cave, in every hole and down every corridor we could see, but there was no sign of Mamadu," wrote Kirk.
Emerging from the cave, Kirk returned to Mamadu's village and talked with the missing man's father. Mamadu's father had gone missing in that cave many years before. He said he was held captive by the demons for five days before a diviner learned how to appease them.
Now another diviner returned from the cave saying he had met with the demons.
"They said they have Mamadu," he told the people. "He is healthy; nothing bad has happened to him. But he provoked the demons and they are not happy. … They also said they don't like the foreigners. 'Don't let them go into the cave again.'
"They want you to make a sacrifice of a brown goat. … The goat must be slaughtered and cooked, along with a lot of rice, and you all must eat it and have a big party and make merry. Then the demons will be happy and they will release Mamadu to you. You must put on this party this coming Thursday."
The people made the sacrifice and put on the party as instructed, but Mamadu has yet to appear.
What happened to Mamadu?
Please pray that he may be found soon, and that the answer will bring glory to God.
Kirk Rogers sees Mamadu's being lost as a picture of the Landumas -- 17,000 people who are still lost. Pray that more Landumas will be delivered from their darkness.
