While studying the Mongolian culture and language missionaries Jeremy and Roxy Thiessen are finding some very interesting "taboos" concerning the care of sheep.
Recently they spent a day with a family of shepherds who own a herd of more than 300 sheep. Jeremy and Roxy were told that while the sheep were being neutered, the owner must make sure that nothing leaves the home. None of the garbage can be given to the dogs; they cannot give away their fresh yogurt nor sell anything. The people believe if any of these "taboos" are broken, the sheep will die.
However, their beliefs did allow them to celebrate with a Mongolian BBQ. A sheep is placed in an aluminum milk can and steamed on hot rocks.
The next day Jeremy and Roxy continued their "culture lesson" by sitting beside some flowers with their friends for an hour. Many Mongolians believe that sitting beside flowers is good for your body.
Friday Jeremy helped haul fertilizer onto the field where potatoes and hay will be planted. The government has allocated 200 hectares to be used for a project to aid the Mongolian people.
The Thiessens are making the most of every opportunity to learn more about the culture and language of the people with the goal of presenting the Gospel message in the most culturally relevant way. Pray for Jeremy and Roxy as they continue to build friendships and study culture and language.
