Partaking of a traditional Mongolian meal was a new experience for missionaries Ben and Andrea Benezette and Jeremy and Roxy Thiessen, and "it was the best mutton I've ever tasted in Mongolia," wrote Ben.
When Mongolian believers Pumbai, Degee, Gamba and Buijing were having a feast, they decided to invite the missionaries, who were delighted to find out more about their neighbors' culture and to spend time with their Mongolian friends.
The missionaries learned that preparing horhuk is fairly complicated. The people gathered by the river and began looking for firewood. Pumba recruited Ben to find some rocks to use for cooking horhuk. They had to be dark with smooth edges and solid enough not to break up during cooking. The rocks were placed in the fire to heat.
When the rocks were hot enough, some mutton was placed in an old-fashioned metal milk can along with the hot rocks. An old tire tube was used to seal the pot and the pot was placed in the ashes of the fire.
While the horhuk was cooking, the missionaries had a chance to relax and fellowship with the believers.
After an hour and a half the horhuk was ready and they were able to eat.
Pray for the Benezettes and Thiessens as they minister in Mongolia. Pray that they will have more opportunities to grow closer to the people.
