SCREAMS BREAK THE NIGHT IN URIAI VILLAGE

Kobi said that `spirits` had told him that someone was planning to harm his wife.

January 30, 2008

by Dena McMaster

The screams of Kobi, an Uriai "witchdoctor in training" in Papua New Guinea, awakened missionaries Elias and Jose Struik in the middle of the night.

Kobi said that his "spirits" had told him that someone was ripping his wife's skirt apart and was planning to poison her. Terrified, he grabbed his bow and arrow and ran through the village.

The major focus of Uriai life is fear -- of spirits, power, witch doctors, tribal enemies, sickness and ultimately death. These fears rule village life among the Uriais and are the motivation behind most of their actions.

When Elias and Jose and their co-workers, Lisa Kappeler and M'liss Spero, heard Kobi's explanation of his running through the village, they realized how desperately the Uriais need the message of peace and salvation that they have come to teach. The team is studying every aspect of Uriai culture and language in order to present the Gospel message in a culturally relevant manner.

Pray for the missionary team ministering to the Uriai people. Pray that they will reach the level of proficiency needed to teach the evangelistic Bible lessons.
