MIBU EVANGELISTS

Mibu evangelists are learning to draw a picture next to relevant points to remind them of the theme.

August 14, 2007

by Dena McMaster

Missionary Joey Tartaglia is enjoying helping to prepare a group of Mibu believers in Papua New Guinea to teach evangelistic Bible lessons.

"I feel so much joy working with these men whom we had a part in leading to the Lord and teaching them how to lead others," Joey wrote. "Many are now involved in the training themselves and I simply act as their cheerleader."

The future evangelists taught by the Mibu Bible teachers must familiarize themselves with the lesson material from a teacher's standpoint rather than as a student. They need to realize that the lessons, which begin in Genesis 1:1, are painting a picture of God through His actions in the Old Testament. Within those Bible lessons there are specific themes that bring out the nature of God, Satan and man.

It is during this time of training that the Mibus develop their ability to read a point in the lesson, determine the main themes and teach accordingly. The budding evangelists need to see beyond just reading the lesson aloud. They need to use the lesson as a guide and teach the principles they have learned from their own experiences.

Joey encouraged the teachers to make a line drawing of the principle theme of each part of the lesson. As the evangelists prepare to teach, they draw a picture next to the relevant points to remind them of the theme. Then, as they are teaching, at a glance they can easily and quickly refresh their memories at to the main point of the lesson.

Each "evangelist in training" came up with their own pictures to trigger their memories as to the main points. "This seems to really help the guys "own" the lessons they teach," wrote Joey. "Please be in prayer for us as a church, as there is still much prep work to be done before we are ready to move on with confidence."
