For the next week and a half, a new Tobo believer, Paulas, will fill a vital role to make the meaning of the scriptures as close to the original as possible.
Translation consultant Linda Krieg arrived in a village in Papua New Guinea today to begin checking the Tobo translation of the book of Mark and key portions of Genesis and Exodus.
Missionary Chad Mankins will read the scriptures to Paulas in Tobo; Paulas will use Melanesian Pidgin to tell Linda what was communicated; and Linda will consult Jason's back-to-English translation.
"We desire that [God's Word] communicates in a clear, understandable and natural way to our Tobo friends," wrote Chad. "We are so thankful for this opportunity, which will bring us that much closer to getting the Word of God in its final form into the hands of the Tobo people."
The Tobo believers continue to enjoy their new life in Christ and the difference that God's Word is making. They meet each Thursday morning as missionary Jason Knapp teaches them key Old Testament and New Testament passages.
"We are still amazed and heartened by the change evident in the life of our neighbor and landowner, Alis," wrote Chad. "This man … has always been known as a hothead and given to fits of anger and threats in village meetings or other gatherings. Since he has become a believer in Jesus, he is so peaceful and has a calm, gracious demeanor.
"He is a real joy to speak with, and desires to learn as much as he can from the Word. Jason has even begun using his help in translating Bible lessons for the new believers' meetings."
Please pray that God's Word will continue to speak to the hearts of the Tobo people, giving them a love for the Lord and a desire to reflect His image.
And pray for the translation team as they put in long hours of sitting, reading and discussion to make sure that God's Word for the Tobo people will be as clear and accurate as possible.
