Last week missionary Jason Knapp not only taught some Tobos how to teach others to read -- he taught two men how to train more teachers.
The new teachers are scheduled to start classes in various villages in the next couple of months.
"It's an exciting time in our ministry when we are now able to take something like the literacy program and begin to take steps towards handing it entirely over to the Tobo church," the Knapps wrote.
At every believer's meeting Jason gives the believers the opportunity to take turns reading the verses out loud. Even though the people still read painfully slow, the missionaries find it is a joy to hear them reading and helping each other when they stumble.
"They have very little material written in their own language to practice reading from, so what better way to practice than with Scriptures in their own language?" the Knapps wrote.
The believers are being introduced to newer concepts about prayer and worship. They have their cultural concepts of prayer and worship and only the religious "elite" practice them.
"The Tobos are extremely shy and uncomfortable doing things publicly in front of others, so this is going to take some time getting used to," wrote the Knapps. "Pray that we can be a good example to them of these things."
