'IT'S JUST TOO EASY'

Jason Knapp and a Tobo man

January 16, 2007

by David Bell

Evangelistic Bible teaching among the Tobo people of Papua New Guinea is down to the last six lessons. The death, burial and resurrection of Christ will be presented next Monday (Sunday in the USA).

In one lesson last week the missionaries taught about Jesus feeding the 5,000, and noted that many of the people began following Him because he fed them.

"This is exactly what the people here are doing," wrote missionary Jason Knapp. "They are using Jesus as a means to rice and canned meat [their version of bread and fish]."

A man from another village approached Jason after the teaching.

"It's just too easy," he said. "I have worked all my life to try and earn my way to heaven and to be clean in God's eyes, and here you are telling us that all we have to do it believe in Jesus?"

Jason told him to listen to what Jesus said: "I am the bread of life." Jason read John 3:16 and John 6:29: "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent." He then asked the man if God needed our help, as if God wasn't strong enough to save us.

"Of course not," the man responded with laughter. "God doesn't need our help."

"So then according to God's Word, do you need your works to help get you to heaven?" Jason said.

The man shook his head and left deep in thought.

"God is working in people's hearts," Jason wrote. "We can see them thinking and questioning what Satan has led them to believe."

A rumor has been spreading that some of the Tobos are going to demonstrate at the meetings this week. The missionaries aren't expecting it to be peaceful if it does take place and are praying that they will have wisdom.

Pray for Jason and his co-worker, Chad Mankins, as they teach this week. Pray that many Tobos will understand what Christ has done for them and place their faith in Him.
