A SERIES OF LONG JOURNEYS

Bayeke

January 11, 2007

by Dena McMaster

When missionary Tom Brendle heard that there would be a class in the Iteri tribe taught in the Melanesian Pidgin language of Papua New Guinea, he wanted to let his Siawi friends know.

So he wrote a letter to the Siawis and suggested some men he hoped would go. The letter was sent to the missionaries in the Abau tribal work. They took the letter by boat to one of their villages. The letter was given to Sabien, a Siawi man who had caused much trouble for the missionaries in the past. All Tom could do was pray that God put the letter in the right hands.

The Brendles have been unable to return to their home among the Siawis while they wait for the resolution of a problem in the village. But Tom flew into the Iteri tribe for the workshop hoping to see some of the Siawi believers.

After the long journey to deliver the letter, it finally reached the Siawi church leaders. Then began the second long journey. Saisu, Yanafi, Bayeke and wife Mainae made the long hike to reach the class. Not many Siawis ever make the arduous hike to the Iteris. But these church leaders wanted to learn more about God's Word.

Tom was thrilled to see the three men walking out of the jungle. They are now attending the discipleship workshop and Mainae is attending the women's meetings. Pray that the class will make God's Word clear to them and they will be able to bring what they learn back to the other Siawi believers.
