The Uriais of Papua New Guinea believe that everything that happens has a cause. Something or someone causes each good or bad thing to happen.
Recently the plastic water tank the Struiks use to store water developed a large crack. Soon it was empty and they were without water. For two days they endured the inconvenience while Elias replaced the tank. But they needed rain to fill the tank.
Later a smooth steady downpour occurred and several Uriais came to the Struiks and asked, "Did you guys pray to God?"
As missionaries Elias and Jose Struik live among the Uriais and study their culture and language, they are also building deep relationships and providing an example of godliness to them. When the rains came to fill the tank, the Uriais said, "You did pray to God for rain, and that's why it rained in the middle of the day."
The Uriais think rain is caused by someone planting sprouts of the sago tree in the forest or by someone throwing white ants in the water. They do not yet have an understanding of who God is, but they are seeing Him in the Struiks' lives.
Pray for Elias and Jose and their co-worker Lisa Kappeler as they build relationships among the Uriais and learn their culture and language. Pray also that God will prepare the hearts of the Uriai people to hear and accept the Gospel message.
