BIBLE TRANSLATION TO BEGIN IN URIAI

September 13, 2006

by Dena McMaster

An alphabet is a big step forward for church planting among the Uriai people of Papua New Guinea.

Missionary Lisa Kappeler met with the NTM language consultant in Papua New Guinea and the Uriai alphabet has been checked and approved.

"What a revolutionary breakthrough," wrote missionary Elias Struik. Elias and his wife Jose are studying the Uriai culture and language.

"Imagine a world without numbers and letters," Elias wrote.
In our Western world, we use ATM machines, instant messaging and computer technology daily. Without numbers or letters, none of that would be possible. The Uriai don't have computers yet, but having an approved alphabet will help them to begin to understand that letters make up words.

Lisa will soon finish her culture and language study and begin preparing to teach the Uriai to read their language and to begin Bible translation.

Translation and literacy will be somewhat delayed because Lisa will soon be on home assignment for six months.

Pray for Lisa as she prepares to begin materials to be used to teach the Uriai through a series of evangelistic Bible lessons. Pray also for Elias and Jose as they continue to study the language and culture to be ready to help with the teaching.
