GOD'S LAW BRINGS CONVICTION

Mibu people under conviction

August 10, 2006

by David Bell

Teaching about the Law has proven to be a big turning point in the evangelistic Bible lessons for many tribal people. It again seems to be the case with another group of Mibus in Papua New Guinea.

Last week, after missionaries taught the Mibus about the Passover and the Ten Commandments, they observed that many people appear to be under conviction.

One man, John, who has been a leader among the Mibus because of his involvement in the cargo cult, has been closely following the teaching and indicates he understands what God's Word is saying to him.

Throughout the teaching, missionaries have been thrilled to hear some of John's comments.

"In the past our ancestors made up stories about where we came from," John said, "and about the spirits of our dead ancestors. They taught us what to do so that we'd worship these spirits instead of God. We've also been afraid of things that God made for us such as snakes and rocks and certain plants and places.

"I in turn have been the leader in teaching many of our young boys these things. Now I know that these are lies. I know that they are wrong. I know that we all come from Adam and so we are his descendants. Therefore we are all rebellious against God and will go to hell because of that."

After hearing teaching about God's Law, John came to the meeting last Thursday with a question. "I'm seeing in the Law that I'm not supposed to covet other people's things. If that's true what am I supposed to do? What? Am I supposed to make my eyes change their thinking? I can't do that!"

"How exciting!" wrote missionary Geoff Husa. "John, among many others, is quite ready to begin to hear about the life of Jesus."

Pray that God's Spirit will open more Mibus' understanding as they hear about the salvation that is provided in Jesus.
