A week after Siawi believer Bayek returned to God from a sinful lifestyle, God gave him victory in a trial of faith.
Bayek's 2-year-old daughter, Rose, fell severely ill with what appeared to be meningitis. Everyone thought she would not live. But Bayek was confident that God would not allow his little girl to die.
Last Sunday, Bayek stood up in church and testified of God's faithfulness.
"I prayed and then I didn't think she would die," Bayek said. "I knew her life was in God's hands. 1 Corinthians 8:6 says 'By His power we are alive.' [Siawi version]"
Bayek said God provided for him and his wife, Mainae, through others while they were at the poorly-equipped hospital.
"God convicted them of the need and they gave us food," he said.
Others gave them a few kinas and someone gave them clothes.
Bayek remembered telling Mainae, "Look, this is our ground. God has helped us stand strongly and convicted others to give us what we needed."
Their daughter survived and the family is back in the village.
"It wasn't the doctors or medicine that made her get well," Bayek told the Siawi church. "It was God that saved her."
The miracle came at a time when Bayek had just returned to God from a sinful lifestyle. Drunkeness, wife-beating and sorcery are common practices among young Siawi men, missionary Linda Krieg wrote.
Bayek shared how the Holy Spirit worked in his heart.
"I couldn't sleep at nights because the Holy Spirit was convicting me," Bayek said. "Now God has strengthened me and helped me to come back. I couldn't have done it on my own."
"While we are living, God looks after us," Bayek said. "God didn't make me just to eat and do gardens, he wants me to do His work."
Pray for Bayek to be a faithful witness among his friends.
